In the late 19th century, Germany was arguably the most enlightened society in the world (try to think of five famous physicists, philosophers, composers or poets without mentioning a German name). This dignity was lost in its entirety, catastrophically, during the national socialist rule. Since then, the Third Reich is *the* central issue of the German national identity and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Every German pupil has to deal with it at about 5 different times during his schooling and most classes visit a concentration camp (most of these sites have been transformed into memorials). Not a single day passes without educational programmes on the public media. Growing up in Germany means growing up with this heritage, and every German hence has developed her or his own way of dealing with the public guilt. For the traveller, this means confusion all the way. You might come across people (especially young ones) eager to talk to you about Germany's history, feeling the

In 1918, the US and Canada were devastated by an epidemic of the flu. However, this was a particularly dangerous form of the flu that killed large portions of the population. At the time, this was far more important than Woodrow Wilson's Crusade to Spread "Democracy" that led to the rise of Hitler and Stalin (also known as WWI and the "Great" War).

However, it is forgotten shortly afterward and is not ever brought up

Could this be because people back in the early 1920s were in denial and simply decided to forget the awful Flu epidemic?

I want to find out how my grandfather's brother was killed in Worl War II. I only know his name, where he was from in The U.S.A. and that he was in Army Air Force. Is there a website that I can use to look up details about exacly how he was killed? Is there a list of obituaries of WWII soldiers?

Can someone please break it down really brief or into detail if you would like (I prefer) about what exactly was the Gestapo and their role during the war? I read a lot of things about them but basically it is too factual and I need to hear it from someone else's view and not so much with extreme wording and whatnot. I would like to hear it from a different perspective. Thank you very much for all replies.
