6 feet 4 inches. he was 1 inch taller than George Washington. Phil Sheridan, Cavalry commander in the Shenandoah campaign, was 5'4". Late in the war, Lincoln wrote to Sheridan, "At the beginning of the war, I was convinced that a cavalryman should be at least 6 feet 4 inches tall, but now I'm convinced that 5 feet 4 will do in a pinch."
