Sure, they fought the Moors (12th - 13th centuries). The Moors were Muslims from North Africa who had come over in the 700s. They had to be defeated and expelled from Portuguese territory before a Christian Portugal could fully emerge. (The Spanish had the same problem with the Moors and did not completely expel them until 1492.)
Then in the 1400s, Portugal developed an overseas empire which they had to defend. War with Spain led to Spanish control of Portugal from 1580 to 1640. There was fighting with the Dutch who were also trying to capitalize on the wealth to be gained by overseas trade. Fighting between the Portuguese and the Dutch was particularly fierce over Brazil.
Portugal was a staunch ally of the British forces under Arthur Wellesley who would become the Duke of Wellington by 1815. Portugal, with a great deal of British help, fought off Napoleon's French armies in the Peninsular Wars of 1809 - 1814.
