During Polk's presidency and the 54'40 or Fight business, why exactly did the US want Oregon? Did it have a good fur trading industry? Was there some economic gain there? Was there some danger to national security if they didn't get it?

History was always my least favorite and worst subject while I was in school. Now that I am out of school I have this urge to learn and read up on everything I can get my hands on about history.

Creepy as it sounds the events that I would most like to read about are the ones that deal with true cruelty, sadness, and darkness. I find it to be very intriguing to learn about the ways humans can treat each other.

Also, I enjoy Women's Rights and strong Women in History.

In terms of reading material I prefer reading more of a book that tells a story instead of a school-book style text that basically just lists facts.

At the top of my list is to learn about the Spanish Inquistion first and then about Hitler's life (I'm currently reading Mein Kampf).

So my question is:

What events in our World's History do you think fit those two categories and what is some literature you would suggest?

Dr. Mengele (aka The Angel of Death) did all sorts of bizarre experiments on labor camp prisoners that frequently killed them. Many were experiments involving exposure to cold, decompression, amputation, etc. that killed the subjects. Did the medical world or US army / space program make use of any of this data for their own purposes?????

Ok, I need to get gifts for my best friend's mom. Since it's Christmas, but I'm already trying to earn enough cash to buy gifts for my best friend which is hard enough, not to mention for her little siblings. So what is cheap but still a great gift? After seeing Apocalypto, i am wondering what happened to them.
I had always thought that they disappeared without a trace, but in the movie they seemed to have lived and then the Spaniards came....

Not to offend anyone, but let's face it some people are not from America, and dont know the history, just as many of our own Americans and maybe more cant recite our history as well. So if we want to be helpful, than why dont we just answer the questions to the best of our abilities so we can move right along? After all we were little kids once too and we were curious, and it wasnt that long ago for most right? Shouldnt we have a little patience?
What else are we doing anyway? Nothing important or we would not be on this site answering questions right?
