Although this artcle points to the "English Civil War" of 1640, I am inclined to disagree.

Rome 1st century B.C. (53 B.C.E. to be precise was the end of that first Civil War)

Rome at the time of Julius Caesar was wracked by civil wars as the three ruling families jockeyed for position.

The Julii, Brutii, and Scipii famlies each controlled portions of the nation known as "Rome". Examples of famous peope from these familes below;
Julius Caesar (Julii)
Brutus (Brutii)
Scipio Africanus (Scipii)

There are really two answers to that question.

Many religous people would say that it was the rebellion of Adam against God. I'm sure that would qualify as a civil war. A war that bible scholars would say is still going on.

If you are looking for the most ancient civil war that pits man against man, I would suppose that would have occurred in ancient Egypt. The history of ancient Egypt goes something like this. There was a Pre Dynastic era, followed by what is known as the Old Kingdom (Started bout 2000BC). This is when the Pyramids were built. After that comes the Middle kingdom (Started about 1600BC)This is when Egyptian writing and culture flourished. The New Kingdom (started about 1000BC) was the time of the great Warrior Kings such as Rameses II.

It seems that between the end of the Old Kingdom and the start of the Middle Kingdom there was a civil war. Not much is known about this war, but we do know that when it was all over, there were new Pharaohs in charge

That would put the first recorded civil war at about 1600BC

There was a Civil War in the Bible during the Exodus. This was 5000 years ago. Apparently a great earthquake occurred and the insurrectionists were put down immediately. Another type of insurrection was the assasination of Julius Caesar, and various other insurrections by the slave class in Rome. But what one could call the first civil war was the fight between Cain and Able, since the population was sparse and the result so terrible. Always Civil War is brother against brother.

It depends upon whom U ask. Since the first written word by many is considered to be the scriptures of Christ, possibly the rule of Caesar and the Roman Empire expansion. If not, then the Crusades would be my guess.

Alexander's generals (the Diadochi) jostled for supremacy over parts of his empire, and Ptolemy, one of his generals and satrap of Egypt, was the first to challenge the new rule, leading to the demise of Perdiccas. His revolt led to a new partition of the empire with the Partition of Triparadisus in 320 BC.
