still planning our Vietnam/cambodian trip. Thanks for all your helpful answers. Now thinking of doing a TNK Mekong delta tour from HCMC to Phu Quoc. Instead of flying back to HCMC with the tour group am considering somehow getting to Kampot in cambodia if possible, then to Phnom Penh and onto Angkor Wat. Any information gladly accepted. Also any info on where to obtain a Cambodian visa along intended route?

Actually, of the 266 geographical entities in the world, Vietnam ranks 72nd in size, being larger than Poland , Italy, and the Philippines (75th, 76th and 77th respectively) and way larger than the entire United Kingdom (The UK includes England, Scotland and Northern Ireland and ranks 84th). Source: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/geo_are_tot

In population, Vietnam ranks 13th out of 267, larger than Germany (14th), France (21st), the UK (22nd), and Italy (23rd). With 83.5 million people, Vietnam is not only larger than the Republic of Korea (24th at 48.6 million) and North Korea (ranks 27th at 22.9 million) but also ahead of both of them combined (at 71.5 million, a unified Korea will still be well below Vietnam). Then why is Vietnam often referred to as a small country even by people of Vietnamese origin inside and outside of Vietnam? A misunderstanding? Ignorance of facts? Prejudice? Always comparing to China or the US?

I am doing a tour of Bangkok, Cambodia and Vietnam in September and I was just wondering can I get a tourist visa for Vietnam at the border, or do I have to apply before I leave? I'll only be staying for about 5 days, and I hold a New Zealand passport.

Cheers

Most of us haven't been there, and our minds are filled with the ugly 40-year-old images of a ravaged country at war. What does the ratio of Communism-to-market economy of the country seem like? Is it primarily a tourist economy? And lastly, does any of war years still exist in the thinking and day-to-day life of the country?

Does anyone know if there is a train that travels from Guilin, China to Hanoi, Vietnam? I have been researching a trip to this part of the world and I've found one tour company and one website that mentions it, but have been told my another company no such train exists. Does anyone know for sure? Better yet, has anyone actually ridden this train?

i was told you are the go to guy for this question.
i would like to do some volunteer work in ben tre province or my tho city on my next visit.
specifically, i am looking for plans, written in vietnamese, for a solar distillation unit. nothing large, just able to provide about 10 or 20 liters a day so that our neighbors and family can have better drinking water.
other than that, i am a carpenter, my wife lives in ben tre, and i have a little free time on my hands when i visit.
