The pattern seems to be that all of our technology was originally developed with some military application in mind. Technology never seems to evolve for peaceful purposes alone.

Would it not be more cost effective to flog offenders than to send them to prison for silly sentences (eg, a few months).
It would also be a good deterrant for persistent petty offenders.

Which tends to be more beautiful to you- something that is shining new, stylish, and unblemished, or something that has been weathered, and shows it has been used? Why do you think you feel this way?

This is going to sound daft, but here goes. I was talking with my kids on the way to school this morning about their hallowe'en party - what to eat, who's wearing what and such like. It's all going well until my five year old asked where hallowe'en came from.
The thing is, outside of this Americanised trick or treat and carved pumpkins version I haven't got a clue. Please help, becasue my kids see me as the font of all knowledge and i'm struggling here!!

I had a strange thing happen to me today, and I just wanted to ask a question about it.

I was at a department store, and I was waiting in line to pay for my purchases. There was an elderly lady (I would guess in her 80s) standing by me, and as we were waiting, we started talking. She made the comment that I have "good hair" and "good skin" just as her granddaughter walked up. Her granddaughter looked at her in horror and said, "Nana, she's not black!" The lady looked at her, and then at me, and then patted my arm and apologized. I told her there was nothing to apologize for, and she gave me a wink.

What I was wondering is if "good hair", or features, or skin are something that is still considered desirable by older African American people. Unless I am mistaken, she was saying that I look like I am Caucasian. I was not offended in any way, but I did wonder if that stuff is still considered important by some people.

Any input you can offer is appreciated. Thanks!

MOBO awards (Music Of Black Origin) is a "normal"& accepted event but I think it's wrong. A "Music Of White Origin" wouldn't ever be allowed because it screams racism & white supremacy does it not? If there were "MOWO" awards, there would be an uproar. And it's not just the type of music, some of the black artists songs don't fit into the R&B etc category & are not "black" in origin at all. What do you think?

There's an urban myth going around that the boy in the Frosties ad who sang "They're gonna taste great" didn't real kill himself but that the story of his suicide was just an urban myth.

Having visited his actual grave in South Africa myself with friends (we cried, we prayed, we sang "They're gonna taste great" softly) I have to ask - is teen suicide the great taboo of our times? Is this poor dead boy's cry for help to be buried under a million Internet sites all claiming that he is still alive because we cannot face the issue of bullying head on?
