Hi,
I have 3 young daughters and I`ve been told that a convicted paedophile is moving into the house right opposite me. Does anyone know what my LEGAL options are to get rid of him?

i don't think there's anything you can do legally, if he was tried and spent his ime in prison and he is now formally released.

First of all, check you sources. You would look really foolish assuming this person is a pedophile without checking with your local police for confirmation. Secondly, there is nothing legal you can do that I am aware of. It's like having a convicted burglar move in next door. You might not like it, but they have done their time and are now entitled to live where they please, unless you live close to a school and the community has rules about convicted pedophiles living within a certain distance of a school. But please confirm your information, don't just jump to conclusions without checking to be sure the person who told you knew what they were talking about.

You can't get rid of him, sorry.
You might, however, want to find out more about why he was convicted. I know, I know, someone is gonna yell at me. But I have a friend who was convicted for sleeping and knocking up his 16 year old girlfriend (he was 20 and yeah, still kinda gross, but understandable-ish). He is now a sex offender for life, even though they are getting married this summer when she turns 18.
Could be this is similar to his case, could be he was molesting young children. Point is, you don't neccessarily know the full story. He did his time, blah blah blah...
The only LEGAL action you have is moving. If you can't or don't want to (its your dream house, its a good location, etc), simply talk to your children about it. Tell them that they have to stay away from him and to never be alone with him no. Matter. What. You prolly don't want to hear it, but try to be tolerant and LEARN about this man. Like I said earlier, you don't know his story. He could have truly reformed, it could have been a case of having a girlfriend to young for him, there are varying degrees of this crime and he could fall into any of them. Make sure you educated your kids about what it means to have him living there and that their are safety in numbers.
Also, you can talk to your lawyer or local District Attorney. Please, whatever you do, don't harrass the man so he moves. This is you committing a crime and can add up to jail time for yourself.

I would contact the police to make sure this is correct before panicking. I don't know why pedophiles aren't given mandatory sentences of at least 25 years or more when convicted. We have far too many liberal, hand-slapping judges in America who think these criminals can be rehabilitated and it's just not so! Ask the police, a judge, an attorney, and child protective services what your legal options are. Then take every step available to you to protect your children.

Oh my God! How horrible a nightmare is that, you'll never be able to take your eyes off him, let alone leave the girls alone for a sec even in the back garden , as his pervy eyes could be watching them..
I recommend you seek advice from your local counsellor on the subject, let them know you feel he is a threat to your daughters, I can't understand how any government can let these people move back into society!

It makes my blood boil, as it is only a matter of time before they start into their old ways again..
I don't mean to frighten you sorry.

But if I where you I would inform the rest of the neighbourhood and rally to have him thrown out, or if you want him out in a couple of days, get a few lads who are willing to give him a good talking too and tell him to move on or else..

if you know what I mean!

Oh god that is so awful and my heart goes out to you, how can they even think of doing that straight across from your house, how the hell are your children going to have freedom now, I really don't know what the law is, but why don't you go to one of those free half hour sessions that solicitors do, you can find them in the yellow pages or the Thomson local directory, they are very good and worth going to, you have time to put your case over and they will do everything they can to help you, please go and don't let this person ruin or rule your life, very good luck.

I feel your fear! You can warn your children and keep an eye on him ! Yes , that would be worrisome but at least you know who and where he is! The ones I would be worried about are the ones you don't know about! The ones who are walking around like normal people, preying on children! All children should be made aware that there are "Bad" people in this world! It is OK for them to be scared, they should be it might keep them safe!

Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything you can do legally. However, you could let all the other Mums in the area know and form some sort of group - between you all I'm sure you can come up with some way of dealing with this scumbag.

You have no legal right to stop him living anywhere near you, and definately no right to move him closer to someone elses children just to move him away from yours.

Where he lives will have been OKed by the local authorities.

The only thing they are normally stopped from doing is living very close to schools

Make it a personal campaign if you can to alert all of your neighbours about his presence, if they do not already know.

Contact you local political representative to voice your concern and, falling that, contact the local media and let them know.
