Would it not be more cost effective to flog offenders than to send them to prison for silly sentences (eg, a few months).
It would also be a good deterrant for persistent petty offenders.

We could flog other prisoners every Sunday morning as part of their jail sentence.

Oh that a good idea, we could have Sunday morning floggings that the public could attend for amusement, trouble is the PC brigade would be up in arms worrying about their human rights and stop it before it happened, the ones in the wrong do seem to have more help than the innocent.

I'm not sure if this is a jokey question if it is sorry for being so serious ;-)

If you had the choice to experience terrible heart wrenching pain for a few days, or lose your freedom completely and be locked up with people who didn't care and could really hurt you for more than a week what would you choose?

Also some offenders may understand pain and a beating more than having their control completely taken away from them. It could even in some cases have been the cause or start of the trouble so adding more onto it wouldn't seem to be the answer.

It would be much more cost effective in the way that keeping them in prison must cost a fortune, but alternatives such as community work could help costs. Surely in the long run it is much more cost effective to the world, not just 'money' wise to try and somehow positively get the offenders to help, think and understand about what they have done and how it effects people. Obviously this wouldn't help in some cases but then those people are more likely to get long term sentences or require medical intervention.

I do think though that there is no point in just locking offenders up and doing nothing with them how is that going to help them or change them in any way except negatively. But then that is getting into the punishment type arguments and going off the point.

Uh - - - flogging for what? There are many valid reasons why 'advanced' civilizations have moved beyond corporal punishment. Such as the fact the main difference between a person sentenced to jail and one who is out on the street is the services of a good lawyer. For decades many people were dumped in jail simply for being the wtong color - - - now millions are in jail for 'drug' related offences - - - so you are saying that a person smoking pot should be scarred for life while a murderer gets to enjoy the perks of a private cell .... By the way, what do you define as 'silly' offences? Passing a bad check, driving while intoxicated, masturbating in a public park? Until the entire process of determining who or what is crime flogging is a back idea. Also flogging never worked as a deterent - - - when in use by the British Navy during the 1800 into the 1900's it was found to be wasteful & counterproductive which was why it was abolished.

Peace...

its only criminals and people in the PC brigade who would disagree with capital punishment - its real disapline. although prison would be enough deterant for some crimes - other would and do need more drastic solutions.
we dont need a society where people get put in a bloody hotel like prison for a few years for rape and murder!!!
these people should be punished in a manner that will scare other people into not repeating the same thing, and make sure of no repeat offenders!
then society could spend all that saved money on feeding the hungry and **** like that!!!

It's not the petty offenders that concern me as much as the money the American tax payer spends to house, clothe, guard and feed the murderers, rapists, pedophiles and other dangerous criminals. I'm in favor of having a good hanging tree on every courthouse lawn and USING it !

Most effective. Infact, they have implimented some forms of flooging now. Not giving offenders drivers licenses that don't pay their fines, child support, repeat DUI's, drugs, and petty offenders.

Public executions. They could sell the video of it too to raise money for the family of the victim

Flogging, public stocks, hanging etc etc, Bring it all back !!
I would buy the rope myself (and do the job myself)rather than pay taxes to feed and clothe rapists, paedos etc..........
