I read something about it in the Wall Street Journal a few years ago. I think it had something to do with the word "white" and the image of Bing Crosby.

I looked in Yahoo music and there are versions of the song by Babyface, Al Green, BeBe and CeCe Winans, Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Mathis, Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, Otis Redding, the Supremes, and of course the all-time classic doo-wop version by Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters.
