with a positive sounding word is pathetic.
doesnt that word merely mean escalating the production of useless items that advertisers try to con us into wanting?
its ironic that economists try to apropriate a word with such ecologically benign connotations[growth], while so called "growth" is leading to the decreased viability of this planet for future generation of all life forms.
do they really operate under the delusion that there can be continous growth ad infinitum with no negative consequences
i know fishermen used to have these delusions about a never ending supply of fish..i thought economists were more intelligent than fishermen..maybe not!!
do all people in the mathematical sciences despise organic life or what? will they only be happy when they have computer brains and android bodies!!
i dont want to hear about economic growth, i dont want us to be cutting others throats so we can prosper, and demolishing communities and environments abroad as long as it makes us money.

I have a young friend I am trying to help out. I am making her car payments to make sure they get paid on time since I co-signed(never again) then she pays me. $180.00 per month. She is struggling for money as she just had a baby. I want to help help because she has been a life long friend but I am not giving handouts, I want her to learn and earn her way especially now that she has her baby. I have seen much improvement in her arttitude and actions lately. I believe strongly in "I will gladly help you if I see you helping yourself"!!
I have offered to let her work some of the car payment down (not all) by doing some house cleaning for me.

My question is how much should the cleaning be worth in this case? Should she earn by hour or task? I don't want to end up paying 2 hours for a clean bath tub. I want to sit down with her and work out a clean clear cut earning schedule that we are both happy with so that we are in any misunderstandings.

We are in the midwest. Any ideas?

It seems like when I talk to Americans the world 'socialism' is so dirty. I realize that America was founded on princples of capitalism; but in reality there is no pure capitalist society.

The 10 countries with the highest standards of living are:

Norway
Sweden
Canada
Belgium
Australia
United States
Iceland
Netherlands
Japan
Finland

http://www.mapsofworld.com/world-top-ten/world-top-ten-quality-of-life-map.html

There are 5 higher than the USA, and all have a lot more socialist policies.

What does everyone else think?

How come when this statement is discussed it is always exclusive to western and NON-communist countries (you often see lists of countries next to it). There are Rich people living in Russia and many of the former Soviet countries. I'll bet there are rich people living in Cuba, Libya, Cambodia, Laos, North Korea-many of the African dictaorship counties. Many Latin American countries (even the poorest) have wealthy people living in them. Wealth is based on dynamics of economy

The US embargoes trade with Cuba (with some exceptions) and so we read about them driving old cars and repairing them with chewing gum and duct tape, but nothing prevents the rest of the world including Europe and China from trading with Cuba. So why is their economy in such lousy shape?
