david is 100% wrong.
In the US families used to be huge. My mother was one of 13 children, my farther was one of 9 children. None of them were starving.
It has nothing to do with climate, pest and disease.
These poor nations have yet to properly develop a basic economic infrastructure, because of lack of freedom and thugs ruling over them.
I don't think high population and poverty are related. For example, the population density of:
South Korea = 478 / sq km
Sudan = 15 / sq km
Here is the link to all the counties population densities.

you live in a very poor country, there is little or no work to be found...there is no money, to house your family properly, or feed them, you can not even grow enough food to survive......so the surounding world seeing this in they,re collective wisdom thinks, " we need to help these people... lets some those poor hungry people food " so you eat well , you feel well TODAY, but nothings changed really, but your happy, and momma,s looking good now that her bones are showing, ...( keep in mind there still no TV, or other entertainment...and also no family planning office near by ) so you do the only thing there is to have fun on this wonderful day , the day you went to sleep with a full belly , .... stop sending food, stop inabling and continuing the the problem, the ancient egyptians started all this mess.... move these poor people from the places in the world where they can,t possible survive without outside help, bring them to areas, where they can support them selves, and they,re children...and gain pride in themselves....in when those crazies, talk about there lost heritage, point out that history is not life, and a future, is the basis for all the dreams these people have today...

Oh dear, I do feel so sorry for some of the people answering here!! No wonder so many countries think the West is heartless and ignorant!!!
The reason poor countries are poor is their inability to produce enough food, the problems with the countries climate, pests and diseases.
The poor people of such countries face significantly high infant mortality rates and the majority of children die whilst still a child. Those that do not die often succumb to crippling and disabling diseases.
The reason why there are so many children is simply that they have four or five children in that hope that one will survive to be a healthy adult!

People in developed countries are so selfish, they give up having kids for toys.
People in underdeveloped nations have kids to get food on the table.
