The force of attraction between two magnets if F Newtons. This force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance, D centimetres, between the magnets.

When the magnets are a certain distance apart, the forcce is 10 Newtons. What is the force when this distance is doubled?

I was going over a practice SAT exam and I saw a problem involving x∆y, and I've never seen this before. Anyone familiar with what that means? The problem is x∆y = x^2 +xy +y^2, what is the value of (3∆1)∆1..

Someone was telling me that ∆ was the equivalent of ^, but if that was the case to get the y out of the exponent you'd have to take the natural log of both sides..

Any help much appreciated

Been given some maths homework and it asks the questions:

Find the constants of a and b such that, for all values of x,
x^2 + 4x + 14 = (x + a)^2 + b

and

You are given that f(x) = x^3 - 7x + 6
1 Show that (x-2) is a factor of f(x)
2 Solve the equation f(x) = 0

I have no idea how to do these and I would really appreciate if someone could possibly post a walkthrough to the solution or just a walkthrough so I can attempt it myself, either one's good.

Thanks :)

At present 40 apple trees are planted per acre and the average yield is 20 bushels per tree. Suppose the experienced grower estimates that for every 5 new trees added per acre, the yield will decrease by 2 bushels per tree. One is interested in how many trees should be planted per harvest.

Let x=trees per acre added
Let H(x)=bushels of apples per acre.

I know that there should be 45 trees/acre for the max bushels, but how do I get the equation? Any help would be appreciated.

The squares of a nxn checkerboard are to be colored with m colors.
Two colorings are said to be equivalent of one can be transformed into
the other by a rigid motion of the checkerboard in 2 dimensions
(no flips). How many colorings are there?
Can you explain how you got that answer? Additionally, the question says to consider the cases for n even and n odd.. but there is no other information. I don't think it has anything to do with the equivalence classes.
