What about southern Russia and the North Caucasus, which is close to Georgia? I have read that these territories are considered to be "Eurasian", but that seems like a silly term to me because technically, all of Europe and Asia is Eurasia.

How exactly is it possible to tell which way is North South East and West from the point where we're standing without looking at the map? I know it's easy to figure out the rest of it once we know where North is but how do we find where North is?

I have a document from 12/10/1778 from County of Zemplinia, Hungary. It gives reference to Noblemen Terebessy Georgium, Terebessy Francis, Terebessy Stephani, and Terebessy Adam.
The family crest is a four sided tower erected over a tripple hill and a turtle dove pierced with a spear on it, and of a flag protruding from the top granted by the emporer of Ferdinand II, in 1624.
The document also mentions the cities Agard and Nagy.

This might sound like a stupid question, but if i determine a longitude and latitude off a map today, would it be the same as one an explorer might have in 1738? The same system was used, wasn't it?
