It's at the NE corner ("top-right" for the directionally challenged) of the Mediterranean Sea.

But did you know that:

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night.

Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
She'll be waiting in Istanbul.

Americans like most peoples of the world each have their own interests. A lack of geographic knowledge doesn't mean a person is ignorant but it doesn't help. I was lucky to have had one teacher that made it interesting to me at an early age. I can find Turkiye on a map and probably know more about the country than most people.

Unfortunately Turkiye is spelled differently in the English language and pronounce differently also. It is spelled the same way and pronounce the same way a the large flightless bird that everyone eats and is associated with one of our biggest national holidays, Thanksgiving. When you say the word Turkey to an American more than likely the bird and not the country is the first thing that would come to mind.

Count me in as another American who knows where Turkey is on the map. It's a great country for lots of reasons, from history to culture to geography!

It also helps that I've been to Turkey, and it ranks near the top of my favorite travel destinations. :- )

Not many countries have so many seas around it (the Black Sea, the Sea of Marmara, the Aegean Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, and possibly the Sea of Crete also dips in close enough).

The locations of some countries are easy to mix up after awhile, so using the Geography Challenge game on the Geography Zone website helps a lot. Highly recommended!

I know where Turkey is and I plan to visit it one day. Seems like a beautiful country (on TV at least).

However, I'm sure the people reading and answering this question are more educated than the "average American," so you're probably not going to get the response you are looking for. The 1 in 8 Americans you are referring to are likely to not have Internet access or even be computer literate to be answering this question.

I think those Americans are probably handicap or something. And yes, I can spot Turkey on a map. The Western side is connected to Greece and Bulgaria, the east to Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Iraq and Syria. The Black Sea is north, the Meditarranean Sea is south, Aegean Sea is west.

Turkey occupies Asia Minor and is bordered by Bulgaria, Greece, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Armenia and Georgia. It sits between the Mediterranean and Black Seas. A small part west of the Bosporus, occupied by Istanbul, is in Europe.

All off the top of my head.

Normally, in English, when the words "the Turkey" are used together like that, they mean the bird we eat at Thanksgiving (or, sometimes a hapless person), though I congratulate you on your quite-good command of our language.

I can find easily find it on a map, because I visited a good bit of it when I was assigned to the NATO headquarters in Naples, Italy.

I do, I do! I've been to Istanbul and Konya. :-)

Turkey is mostly in Asia, with a bit in Europe (very unusual) From Istanbul west is Europe and the rest is Asia.
