well if you wanted to know then why are you asking this question?
they occur when tectonic and oceanic pltes either slide next to each other push against each other and form a mountain or one sinks under the other. there are more though

Earthquakes are generally caused by seismic activity. An earthquake is defined as a shaking or rolling of the earths surface.
Earthquakes are caused by the convections currents in the upper mantle of the earths surface. These move in a circular motion- heated magma rises, cools, and sinks to be heated again- and the process repeats itself over and over again. This process causes the overlying plates to move.
Some plates may move towards each other and collide. For example, when an oceanic and continental plate collide, the heavier oceanic plate sinks. The plate may become 'stuck' at a catching point, the pressure builds up and it eventually breaks free, causing a tremor. There are three types; shallow, intermediate and deep. The deeper it is the greater the destruction and strength of shock waves.
They also can occur at transform fault lines e.g. The San Andreas Fault Line. This is where two plates are moving in the same direction but at different speeds. Sometimes they become stuck until the pressure builds up and they break causing a tremor.

Earthquakes are often caused by tectonic plates rubbing each other, resulting in movements the the Earth surface. Many times, the plates only rub slightly against each other so we cannot feel. However sometimes, severe movements happened and resulting in earthquakes. Scientists use the Richter scale to measure the strength of earthquake.
If you study more detail into geography and the cause of earthquake, there would be 4 types of earthquakes. Destructive margin, constructive margin, collision margin and conservative margin.

An earthquake is the result from the sudden release of stored energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves.
At the Earth's surface, earthquakes may manifest themselves by a shaking or displacement of the ground. Sometimes, they cause tsunamis, which may lead to loss of life and destruction of property. An earthquake is caused by tectonic plates getting stuck and putting a strain on the ground. The strain becomes so great that rocks give way by breaking and sliding along fault planes.
Earthquakes may occur naturally or as a result of human activities. Smaller earthquakes can also be caused by volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear tests. In its most generic sense, the word earthquake is used to describe any seismic event—whether a natural phenomenon or an event caused by humans—that generates seismic waves

I have attached the BBC weblink as it make be of some help:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/hottopics/naturaldisasters/earthquakes.shtml
When the Earth moves
Earthquakes are caused by the motion of tectonic plates - individual sections that make up the Earth's surface like panels on a football. Immense strain accumulates along fault lines where adjacent plates meet. When the rock separating the plates give way, sudden seismic ground-shaking movement occurs.
Of course, if we want to know why earthquakes happen, we need to dig a little deeper

there are tectonic plates in earth.they need shifting from time to time or just say it's in their nature .when they move and rub against one another huge cracks form in the earth at some places and this is also the reason for earthquakes to appear.for further information this is the website you can find out more and accurate information about earthquakes:

Earthquakes happen for VERY different reasons on different continents.
EUROPE= Italians/ the ongoing German march to glory/ the wind from millions of white flags being waved in france/ the spanish cowards running from the muslims/ the whole of eastern europes heads exploding at the thought of having electricity in their homes.
AFRICA= The massive quantity of AIDS victims dropping dead at the same time.
NORTH AMERICA= Russian retaliation.
SOUTH AMERICA= The regular raising and lowering of the land mass as cocaine is shipped out.
ASIA= Sumo wrestling and north koreas attempt at nuclear power.
AUSTRALASIA= The constant slamming of prison cell doors.
ANTARCTICA= The movement of continental ice shelves being towed north to fill the warm drinks of the west.
THE ARCTIC= The bloody non-stop russian submariners blowing themselves up.
I hope this helps although i don't advise you quote me.

A build up of pressure as one tectonic plate pushes against
the other. When no slip occurs for a period of time it can suddenly let go.The greater the pressure the bigger the
earthquake. The Earths crust is made up of many tectonic
plates and fault lines. Japan is on a junction of three of these
plates, Asia plate, Pacific plate, and America plate.

Tectonic plates are constantly moving underneath us, and these movements cause earthquakes.
Usually, we cannot feel these tremors, but there are times that energy stored by these movements are suddenly released, thus we have earthquakes.
