If you have an accurate clock set to Greenwich mean time (GMT) (ZULU) longitude 0 you can determine your local longitude. This is done by observing local apparent noon (LAN) and noting the GMT time at which LAN occurrs. Every hour the earth rotates 15 degrees (360 /24hrs). The difference in time between noon GMT and LAN in hours times 15degrees will tell you the angle of rotation (longitude) from Greenwich.
