I have friends who live in Sault Ste-Marie, MI. For anyone not from the Great Lakes State, that's pronounced "Soo Saint Marie", and is commonly referred to as simply "the Soo".

I have seen this in other languages (the Hague in the Netherlands or la Beauce in Québec, for example), but can't think of another example in a predominantly English-speaking country. Can any of you?

stop calling mexico a third world country. It's an upper-middle income country (source; wiki) aka, 2nd world country (fastly towards its way to becoming a first world country) and the only reason it is largely known as a 3rd w.c. is because of the general view of Southern Mexico which is very cultural and people don't want to modernize, fearing it would sacrifice their culture. Happens in many countries (look up; india, korea, china) and even in the USA (native americans) This is something here in USA that is hard to understand because we've become such materialistic whores (its a vague statement but we all know it's true). I should also note that mexico is 13th in GDP in the world, barely behind Spain and way ahead of S. Korea (all of which are not generalized as third world countries) So do your homework before you speak your mind and keep in mind that some people read these things and may be offended by your lack of research.
