I have friends who live in Sault Ste-Marie, MI. For anyone not from the Great Lakes State, that's pronounced "Soo Saint Marie", and is commonly referred to as simply "the Soo".

I have seen this in other languages (the Hague in the Netherlands or la Beauce in Québec, for example), but can't think of another example in a predominantly English-speaking country. Can any of you?

I'm only talking about nicknames which are derived from the city name itself, ie. the Shwa and the Zoo as two of you pointed out.
