The Earth and other large planets are round because, if a body is big enough its own gravity will squeeze it into a ball. Last summer's debate over Pluto took this into account and is one of the key qualities in defining planets and dwarf planets now. If you look at images of most asteroids and very small moons, the are generally not round at all. They do not have enough gravity to pull them into spheres.

Given enough mass, gravity will do the rest. Pulling equally from all directions (for the sake of argument) an irregular shape is impossible to maintain. Even the mountains that do exist are limited in height by the force of gravity.

It is not round. The Earth is wider at the equator then it is at the poles. As the Earth spins at roughly 1000 miles per hour. Centrifugal force makes it expand at the equator causing it to collapse at the poles. Not a lot of difference, but it is measurable.
