The phrase third world country is a misnomer, its meaning in todays literary and coloquial speech is to denote how financially wealthy a country is. In fact its origins and true meaning denote the political alignment of a country during the cold war and after.
Third world was given to countries originally unaligned with most free democratic states, which coincidentily were also underdeveloped at the time. This included much of Latin America, Africa, Indus regions, South East Asia and some Arab states.

Mmm.. because of the unequal distribution of wealth perhaps.
Yes, there are people who Christmas for them is getting a bowl, but not of rice, but beans (yeah... we like beans... call me the "b" word I don't mind) But there are also disgustingly rich people in Mexico. Look at Carlos Slim, the world's third wealthiest man. I agree with you... if being a "modern" and "developed" country means losing our heritage and culture... then I want to remain poor and undeveloped. Also, I want to make a point, Spain has a population of 40 million, Mexico has 100 million... so, I think the development for Mexico without losing culture can happen, it is REALLY hard, but I think it is posible.
You all people (Mexican and American) should read this. Even if it is a joke, it summarizes best my opinion.

Mexico is not a Third World Country. It's richer than many european countries, including Spain who conquered and looted it. Unfortunately much of that wealth is in the hands of a few, very wealthy, "white" Mexican elite who don't share with the rest of the majority of poor masses.

The title is not only due to the economy. Look at the news... whats going on in Oaxaca (week long strikes), and the gang murders in Sonora, and the guerrilla and the fact that until recently there were 2 presidents?? There is no political stability in Mexico, and I think until those things get cleared up, you can start changing the label.

I have never ever called Mexico a third world country. In fact, why do we have first, second and third world countries? Even first world countries have areas affected by poverty. It's silly and very biased. Talk about being judgemental

Because it is, technically.
Perhaps what you dont understand it that it is not an insult or a derogatory remark. It is a geo-economic description.
