I am an amat gold prospector and found that a mix of regular table salt and venegar makes a good cleaning solution for small (tiny) amounts of ore.

I have placed a small amount of ground ore into a solution of salt and vinegar and then added a very small amount of mercury to help retrieve the gold particles.

What I am seeing is that over time, gas bubbles appear on top of the blob of mercury.

Anyone have an idea of just what kind of reaction is going on here? Is this something I should be concerned with?

BTW, the solution, ore, and mercury are in a well sealed vial.

Help! gurus of chemistry.. question: A 64.213g sample of an unknown compound contained the elements carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen in unknown ratios. It was determined that the combustion of this compound provided 128.2319g of CO2 and 78.73713g H2O. A separate mass spectrometry experiment confirmed the molecular weight of this compound was 88.1528 amu. Use this infomation to determine the molecular formula of this compound.

I would like to know how to do it!

I tried to dissolve Sodium Alginate (SA) with Trisodium Phosphate (TSP). At first, it was successfully dissolved resulting clear, bright pink, thick liquid gel. Then I tried another experiment with TSP & SA from different source. They are more coarse & grainy than the first one. They results yellowish & unclear color. I don't know what caused this. Is it the TSP or SA? I also don't know whether they have same quality with the first ones. I suspected the purity level of both substances. Is there any methods to determine the purity? and the method to purify them?

We are trying to purify BaSO4 by dissolving it in an Na5DTPA solution and then re-precipitating it out, but we can't seem to get past the first step of dissolving the BaSO4! We are using a 0.05M DTPA solution made up with 1M NaOH which we got from a journal article. We've tried grounding the BaSO4 into fine powder, heating, ultrasonicating but nothing works. Any ideas?

In the electrochemical cell described by the cell diagram above, what reaction occurs at the anode?
a) Zn-> Zn2+ +2e-
b) Zn2+ + 2e- --> Zn
c) Cl2 + 2e -> 2Cl-
d) 2Cl- --> Cl2+ 2e
e) Zn+ Cl2 --> ZnCl2

answer is A but i dont get it
i dont get what the "diagram" is trying to tell me either

by the way, the "/" slanted lines in the diagram are supposed to be straight lines but i made them slanted to make it look less confusing
