I had an organic chem test today and here is one of the questions a few of us struggled with.... "Draw the conjugate acid of propanol." Hoping someone can help me even though I know we cannot draw figures on this site!!!

Hi

i will help u.....

conjugate acid of propanol is propanoic acid is
NOT POSSIBLE AS PROPANOL IS ITSELF AN ACID

=============================================

so this is how we write the conjugate BASE (not acid)

CH3-CH2-CH2-O-

==============================================

To know the mechanism........

react propanol with water,............

CH3-CH2-CH2-OH + H-OH --------> CH3-CH2-CH2O- + H+

SO , this is only left (CH3-CH2-CH2O-)

============================================

here the link to the structure and proper mechanism

==============================================

It makes no sense in saying that " conjugate acid of propanol"

Hope this is the best answer...
all the best for ure test

the conjugate acid is always found by adding a proton to the structure - the thing is to figure out where it could go. in propanol the only atom with lone pairs of electrons is the oxygen. rather than an -OH group then, you would have -OH2+. this is probably not very stable but that's the only halfway reasonable answer i think.

CH3-CH2-CH2-OH2+, in this case the base will be propanol - it's a property of alcohols similar to water - its conjugate acid is H3O+

let us discuss the matter in detail.
Propanol is n-C3H7OH.if it has to behave as an acid (very very weak acid indeed if it has to be called as an acid)then we have the following equilibria
C3H7OH=C3H7O^- +H^+.&if it has to act as a base then the following equilibria C3H7OH+H^+=C3H7OH2^+ .so the conjugate acid of propanol is C3H7OH2^+

agreed, the conjugated acid is indeed PrOH2+.

Chemdraw is the standard. There are a few free ones online. Chemsketch, for example.
