Is the war the only reason? If so, why can't we get it somewhere else?

Gas prices vary according to local demand and local taxes.

A lot of the expense in American gas is the taxes that are put upon it.

And we can get gas from other places, but it would be more expensive since we are already so entrenched in the Middle East/Venezuela - OPEC oil regime.

And yes, the US has a large reserve supply, but we don't want to tap into that right now.

Besides, I think that oil is such an inefficient fuel, we really need to move on people!

The gasoline is more expensive because :

1) The war is especially the reason
2) Because the gasoline is decreasing and is not so much .

The price of gasoline is based on the same factors as anything else. They are:
The cost of production. This has increased some due to laws requiring different additives for different places.
The law of supply and demand. This is the most important. Demand has increased in certain countries due to development. Supply has not kept up.
Government policy. Taxes are high and depending on your state, can make up half of the cost. In return for your money you get a few roads and lots of waste.
The existence of monopoly. This can subvert the law of supply and demand. Conspiracy advocates think a monopoly exists. Others think not and the other factors account for the price.

To begin with, this question belongs either in the economics section, or politics, because it has way more to do with those things than it does chemistry.

There is a large supply of oil, but it is located mostly in a few countries. Those countries have gotten together and formed the Oil Cartel, which works to limit the supply and increase the price of oil so that they can make a gazillion dollars on it.

Actually, if companies did that in the US, it would be called "price fixing", and it would be illegal. But, since we can't control the cartel, we must pay the price.

It is expensive in UK / Europe mainly because of tax reasons - and if you are in the US - because you have been used to subsidised fuel and now have to pay a market rate.

In the UK, we have been paying around £ 4.50 ( $9 ) a gallon for years. Admittedly our gallons are a little larger than yours - about 4.5 litres, but even so, we pay a GOPPING price for gasoline.
