I know the obvious-- salts washed from the skin and allowed to evaporate (mixed sodium and potassium salts, IIRC), impure ammonia from the urine, impure hydrochloric acid from the gastric juice, and methane from the obvious source.

Any others? I mean, any others not requiring a great deal of extraction or processing; I'm not talking about getting iron out of the blood.

I'm working on a story involving people discovering chemistry (not alchemy, please!) and having extremely limited resources with which to work. Please do not refer me to internet references or textbooks, because my characters do not have access to them. Persons who disregard this will obviously not get Best Answer!

Thanks to all who answer

I'm sure that there are many religious explanations for this, but I'm looking for a biological one. If cells keep on replicating themselves, why don't organs, muscles and other things stay the same? Why would they get weak? I understand why skin would get wrinkly, and not stay smooth, but not about other body parts.

P.S. I'm not looking for emotional support here(I'm not old), I'm just curious.

Sure, Darwin found plenty of evidence for evolution on the Galapagos... but it's still a theory. I think that because though there are many athiests (who are pretty good at practicing law) in our country, not too many people would be religiously offended by their students learning about intelligent design or creationism. Why the heck don't they let students be taught those, all in their biology class?

I'm not an evolutionist but do not insult the idea. but I was wondering with all these weird things being born like the six legged goat or the funky pig that had 3 eyes and other stuff like this do you believe maybe we are going though an evolutioary change in some spiecies. possibly because of the threat of global warming or maybe just nature moving forward or could it just be genitic flukes. all seam to have a good point behind them what do you think(non evolutionist please stay out of this one its for the idea of science thinking only)
