The basic concept for this “gene farming” approach was developed in the mid-1980s and gained new impetus with the successful generation of cloned farm animals by nuclear transfer. The recent success achieved by the production of polyclonal human immunoglobulins from transchromosomic calves has revealed the potential of this technology; one of its particularly attractive prospects being the production of large amounts of specific human Ig after vaccination. There is no doubt that this technology will improve the life of all involved. As far as impacting the environment one way or another; organisms living longer will stress the environment's resources a bit more. But beyond that probably nothing.

The positive aspects are predominantly economic. Money can be made.
