I was wondering when they show where a spacecraft is right above a flat map of the earth, how come there are usually 3 or so paths that seem to mirror the actual orbital path? It's very frequently shown on the big main screen at places like Mission Control and stuff. What do those other lines represent?

im posting this question because i want to see if anybody else here have witnessed a ufo before. When i was in elementary school i think in 4th or 5th grade? i was walking home with my mom, it was like at 6 at night and it was dark, anyways i saw above me a HUGE plate craft hovering in the sky above me. there lights on the spaceship, little red dotted lights around it. i was watching it then slowly it disappeared.

this probably will sound fictional to some people but frankly it is not. why would i lie to you guys? i dont know you and you dont know me and i have no reason what so ever to trick you and plus i have nothing to gain. i kinda dont believe this myself but i really witnessed this and i was wondering if anybody else has???

If the universe is a similar age, how do you explain that we can see the light of our closest galactic neighbor (Andromeda), let alone distant galaxies which are billions of light years away?

Our 5 year old son has become interested in Astronomy. This interest was put in full speed ahead drive this past week when my husband took him out to watch the Geminid Meteor Shower. We want to foster this interest, but neither of us have any clues about this hobby. I have researched this on the net and have time and time again read it is best to start them out with a good pair of binoculars as they can see a wide scope of sky with these instead of a telescope which will only focus on a small area of sky, thus making it harder to analyze what he is seeing. We are also planning a trip to a local planetarium and observatory to let him learn more.
Anyone out there who is into Astronomy and starwatching I would enjoy some feedback on how to introduce him properly and techniques so he doesn't become frustrated. I did read that this can be frustrating in the beginning until you learn how to find what you are looking for in the sky. Advance thanks!!

All objects with gravity have an escape velocity where an object traveling at a certain speed can not be captured by the object. For Earth it is 7 miles per second, for an asteroid you can jump fast enough to achieve it.

If you consinder all the mass in the known Universe, what is the escape velocity?

I am considering the purchase of a telescope for my daughter. In checking out a few, I quickly became confused regarding the various factors. Which is better... reflecting or refracting? How much power do I need? Etc.

I am wondering why the heliocentric theory, after several hundred years is still in category of 'theory', does that mean that the geocentric theory still holds water and can not be disproven?

I was thinking about getting one for my dad for Christmas, but I know nothing about them. Can you tell me about the different features, and what is considered good? Any particular brands?

I'd like to spend no more than around $300.

Maybe no-one can answer this, maybe the answers will be massive speculation delivered with unprecedented authority, or maybe there is a definite solution. The question is out there now people, go to work!
