going to Costa Rica and need to see distant birds etc..

Hmmm, birds you say? I'm interested in some of the lesser passerines myself...

Yes the 8x32's are probably the better choice for birding, while the 7x42's might be better for stargazing or lower light levels (the larger aperture gathers more light).

Higher powers require a steadier hand, but don't let someone sell you on image stabilized models. They work amazingly well, but eat batteries. You can always brace yourself leaning on a tree or something.

I carry a decades-old Bushnell 8x32 roof-prism model, sturdy and compact; though for astronomy I pull out the Celestron 11x80 and a tripod to support it.

close call, but I'd go with the one with a little more power and a little less light (coming in).... so the 8x32. But, are they the same brand? Quality is important!

Hi. The first number is the magnification and the second is the front lens size in millimeters. Of the two, my choice would be 7x42. You should check out the night sky!
