Space exploration is by its nature highly speculative. Are the risks better assessed by a private sector that seeks a return for its investment?

Kepler's third law states that the square of the orbital perod is equal to the cube of the semi major axis of the orbit.

I have difficulty understanding this could some one please break it down in simpler terms so I can understand it better?

When I was about 15 half my street saw 5 balls of light in the sky that just hovered. They lasted for about 10 minutes when all of a sudden they all shot off at tremendous speeds.
I had a chance to look at them through binoculars and I saw that they spinning.
We phoned our local airport and they said it had been reported by pilots and civilians alike.
Too days later they were reported to of been seen in China.

Especially in astronomy, what we know of the universe is pretty much solely theory based on observations of our planet applied to space and astronomy but people regurgitate this information as fact without consideration or belief that it is agruable and constantly under examination and investigation.

A lot of people say that there are aliens among us or that they've seen alien spacecraft, but if all this is really true, then what is the real reason behind extraterrestrial visitation to earth? What makes us so interesting that aliens would use their technology to come visit us?

Last night on the news they mentioned that the space shuttle would be visible at 9:23 (Calif. time) in the western sky. Sure enough two of us went out and we were able to spot it for a few seconds (looking like a medium-magnitude star, moving quickly across the sky ... very nice!). It climbed from the horizon ... but within a few seconds, it just faded out and disappeared as it climbed and we couldn't see it any more. It was a clear sky. Why would that happen? (I think I know, but I'm wondering if someone can give me a more informed description.)
