From one is stated is that global warming is caused by the energy of the sun, being trapped in atmosphered...etc. But if all homes start using solar houses/energy for their homes, would that help decrease the heat/energy that would been trapped in atmosphere causing global warming?

There is a (technical / scientific?) word that temporally escapes me. Wondered if you can help?

It refers to the ability of a system to be defined by the absence of another system rather than in it’s own right.

It’s easier to explain by example.

Cold can only really be defined by the absence of heat (as we measure heat not cold). Therefore cold is a ?????? property.

(I have had no joy on the words section so thought I'd try here)

Any ideas?

Charges of + 3.0 nC and - 2.0 nC are located at opposite corners, A and C, respectively, of a square which is 1.0 m on a side. What is the electric potential at a third corner, B, of the square (where there is no charge)?

I'm getting very confused about sample variances. I've got s squared, the unbiased pop variance, as the n-1 divided version. But in regression and sample statistics I'm asked to calculate s squared with the n divided version. I don't understand why they are different?

(a) Find the potential at points a and b in the figure below for charges Q1 = + 1.00 nC and Q2 = - 1.00 nC.
(Point A is 5cm from Q1, Q1 is 5cm from point B and point B is 5cm from Q2)
(b) How much work must be done by an external agent to bring a point charge q from infinity to point b?

I can get Va and Vb, I can't get the work done.

There's this word problem, that says:
An inheritance of $16,000 was divided among three investments yielding a total of $990 in interest per year. The interest rates were 5%, 6%, and 7%. Find the amount in each investment if 5% and 6% investments were $3000 and $2000 less than the 7% investment.

Then, I asked the teacher how you would solve this problem using the variables and linear systems. Then, she said that the equations are:
x + y +z = 16,000
0.05x + 0.06y + 0.07z = 990
x + 3000 = z
y + 2000 = z

I understand how she came up with the first and the second equation. However, I don't understand the third and the fourth equations, and the last part of the problem, where it says " if 5% and 6% investments were $3000 and $2000 less than the 7% investment."

Can someone explain to me how these equations are formed?

If a plane was flying from Heathrow to JFK, the current flying time is 7 to 8 hours at approx 5- 600 mph.
Since the Earth rotates west to east at approx 1000mph, could a plane fly to the correct latitude and fly in a holding pattern whilst it waits on JFK to appear over the horizon?
Assuming this could be done, would it speed the route up?

Hi:

The following martial arts site discusses certain techniques to incapacitate opponents. The one I quoted talk about pain causing loss of consciousness by disrupting the reticular formation. Is this true science or just some age old myth?

quote from http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:ziuTpWWP9_oJ:www.internetarmory.com/self_defense.htm+%22neural+shock%22&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=3 :

"It is speculated that various organs of the body can send pain impulses to the brain stem indicating a severe or overwhelming bodily injury. The reticular activating system responds by producing a functional "shut down", which results in loss of consciousness within a second or two."

If this is real science, then what is mechanism in which the so-called "shut down" occurs?

Thanks,

Green

hI GUYS,
Does anyone know if it is possible to see the ISS by the naked eye from both the USA and Southern UK at the same time. My reason for asking is , tonight around 5:30 pm i looked up at the sky which was starting to get dark and noticed this single bright light. I thought it could be the ISS so I fired up my laptop and it took me 30 mins to find a site to show where the ISS is at the time, NASA said on their website that they no longer show the ISS position live. On finding a site I found out that The ISS was going around southern America, at the same time this single bright light was still very visable from my back garden, there were no nother stars visable at the time.

Hi!
I am an English teacher in Japan. Every year I play a "Find someone who has a birthday in ..." game with my young learners. The object of the game is to ask "When is your birthday?" to everyone in class until students have found at least one person for every month. The surprising thing is that we usually can't finish.
I enjoy math, so if I could receive an answer with the probability equation for this problem, I would be most pleased. Also, how many students would I need in order to have at least a a 50% chance of completing this activity?
Thanks in advance,
Chris Elvin, EFL Club, Japan
