I am not sure but I think it was the Phillips tool company that designed and the manufactured it as a better, more positive way of turning the screw (like the posidrive but different company)

and I hate him too

There are different angles on cross head screws and you must use the right head. I like them as if you magnetise your Phillips screw driver you can hold the screws with the head - it is more difficult to do this with slothead screws. Also they are better for electric screw drivers
