My husband got a letter saying we won $85,000 dollars from "North-American Sweepstakes" It gaves us a serial number and "lucky winning numbers". It also gave us a claim number. And a number to Montreal, Quebec to call to claim the money. (My husband called and said the guy sounded African or something and could barely understand him) In the envelope was also a very real watermarked check for $2,500 from Watertown Savings Bank. (I researched the bank and it is real.) The letter says to money gram $2,300 to an address in New York, New York for taxes on the winnings.
We always enter contests and sweepstakes but don't know for sure if we entered this. Our address on the envelope is handwritten and my husband's name is spelled right -- "Bryan".
Is this real (I serious doubt it---We're not that lucky haha)?? And if it's a scam...how the hell does it work? And how did they get our address and information?? How do they profit from this? And how can I report these freaking people??
