My husband got a letter saying we won $85,000 dollars from "North-American Sweepstakes" It gaves us a serial number and "lucky winning numbers". It also gave us a claim number. And a number to Montreal, Quebec to call to claim the money. (My husband called and said the guy sounded African or something and could barely understand him) In the envelope was also a very real watermarked check for $2,500 from Watertown Savings Bank. (I researched the bank and it is real.) The letter says to money gram $2,300 to an address in New York, New York for taxes on the winnings.

We always enter contests and sweepstakes but don't know for sure if we entered this. Our address on the envelope is handwritten and my husband's name is spelled right -- "Bryan".

Is this real (I serious doubt it---We're not that lucky haha)?? And if it's a scam...how the hell does it work? And how did they get our address and information?? How do they profit from this? And how can I report these freaking people??

It's not real. Anytime you win anything valued over $600 whether it be money or something tangible like say a plasma tv, you will have to sign an affadavit so that the IRS can tax you on it the following year.

NO........I believe this to be the same thing I went through. I have been receiving emails from different places and all end up being from the United Kingdom no matter where they say it was from. One from Microsoft, another yahoo lottery,Coca Cola etc. And yes when i called about of them the man sounded like he was from Africa or India or some place like that. It was on the news around the same time I had received one and the man told me the $2 something check that I was to cash for taxes and he wanted information about my checking account. I said forget it. Later the next day on the news there was an old couple that got a check from the same place. They cashed it and it turned out to be a scam. They cashed it and had to send this man the money for the taxes out of their own checking account. Turned out that because they cashed it it was a loan they had to pay back with alot of interest! So probably yours is the same thing. Be careful!!

Wow. I got that same thing, different address. I was really excited that I had one money and started like freaking out, and I called the company and they told me to deposit the check and wait for 48 hours for it to clear. I thought that it was too good to be true, so I called my dad, and he had me come over and he called the police, because he thought it was a scam, and he didn't want it to basically ruin my life, and they said that we shouldnt do what they said. And my dad called the company back, and listened to what they had to say, and they told him not to tell anyone about it, until the check was cleared, So I never did anything with it. I went back home to my computer and researched the Ultra Lotto Commision, and thats when I figured it was a fraud, Hope this helped before its too late!

I think that once you cash the check and send part of the money then a few weeks later the bank will say it was fake and you owe all that money to them it happens all the time but in different situations

If your father deposited the check and all the money is still in the bank account, he should contact the bank and explain the situation to them. That check will bounce eventually and the bank will take the money out of the account anyway. Better to be up front about the whole thing.

It is a scam. Anytime they want you to send money it is not legit. The check they send you wont clear and you will owe your bank, plus be out the 2300 you send them. Don't send any money! ! ! !
