Often, when I hear a song or "jingle" on a television commercial, I'll remember the music very quickly. Sometimes, I'll either hum or sing the tune, whether or not the commercial is on TV at that moment.
Friends of mine, and one friend in particular, say that this makes me a "sucker", and that the commercials are influencing me to buy products. Of course, I agree that the commercials are DESIGNED to make consumers buy products, but I have rarely, if ever, been influenced enough to buy anything. For example, I have been singing the Oscar Mayer "b-o-l-o-g-n-a" for most of my life, but I can't recall ever purchasing Oscar Mayer bologna. I just happen to have a good memory when it comes to music.
I think advertisers intend to make commercials memorable, and they intend to make the jingles "catchy". But does the fact that I do remember them make me a sucker?
