or boogie woogie blues on piano? Do you take a break from classical ever to play other genres like blues, jazz or maybe even ragtime?

I'm still finding my feet in this classical music world, but at the moment I'm looking into purchasing Karajan's 1-9 symphonies of Beethoven, performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Of course i have delved into different composers, and I do thoroughly enjoy Karajan's work (despite the critics who label him as without emotion), but I was just wondering when you have most enjoyed Beethoven, i.e. with which conductor? Why?

anything that is calm, relaxing perhaps with a touch of harpsichord. Evocative of long sunny summer days, birds & insects buzzing lazily etc etc

I'm not a huge fan of classical music, but I was recently given a CD of "The Planets' by Holst. It's incredible! Can anybody recommend similar pieces? They don't necessarily have to be by the same composer.I would just like something with that same, more modern style.

I think I should continue working on it because I have a lot of fun doing so but my friend who has been playing piano for 13 years always discourages me. Yesterday when I played for him a bit he stopped me and said it was terrible. I found it harsh but appreciated his honesty nevertheless. What I didn't appreciate was when he said something like ...and you never will be able to play it.

I agreed with him that I lacked emotion but I also pointed out that I am merely trying to learn the notes first and feel that I will be able to work on other aspects such as emotion later.

I've been playing piano for 7 months now self taught. I don't know how to read sheet music yet so I learned this from a .midi file which I know isn't a good idea but sheet music is scary.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ni35Q5WiwHY It quite slow and contains many wrong notes but I'd appreciate any advice whatsoever as brutal as you want! : )

as a singer, we are often warned about experiencing our own emotions to the point where they interfere with the standards of performance we'd like to deliver. we are also taught that the expression of our emotion ( without feeling it in the moment) helps the public to tune into and experience their emotions, which is what we want. If Canio really sobbed in "Ridi, Pagliaccio" or Rodolfo cried his "Mimi!" it would hurt their voices. What are the limits for instrumentalists like?

I'm taking piano diploma this year so I need to write program notes. It's generally done but I'd just like to refine it, 'cos I feel like I haven't got a lot of information. Can anyone tell me of any good website where I can look up on the pieces?

Also, I'm doing
Bach - Prelude&Fugue 5 from the Well-tempered Clavier II
32 variations in C minor by Beethoven
Polonaise (Op 26 No. 1) by Chopin
la fille aux cheveux de lin and minstrels by Debussy.

So if anyone know any info on these pieces can tell me too? thanks

Too often we tend to allow ourselves to be influenced primarily, even only by lighting exponents of our own instrument. Re-ordering a shelf or two of recordings this evening, I came across two lodestar recordings that completely reshaped my own thinking as a pianist, 25 years ago: Riccardo Ricci playing Sibelius' Violin Concerto, and Zino Francescatti's rendering of that of Beethoven. What 'off-piste' performances have reshaped your approach?

(firstly, sorry for my bad english)
hello,
i'm searching for a commented recording of the first movement of beethoven's fifth symphony.

i had it four or five years ago, and it's very special for me, because it was the first time i heard the 5th sympony when i had 14 or 13 years...
also, i think it's very rare because it was a commented version: there were two guys commenting everything that happened while the orchestra (i think it was new york's) played the music.... those guys said: "now, the violins play", but interestingly, like narrating a baseball match. i don't remember anything especific of the commments except for a moment when a horn has a big error and the two guys note it.

also, at the very start, like a minute or so, other man says a lot of things about beethoven or about "another approach to classical music" (i bet he means his two comrades") and very specifically, i remember that he had a cup of water (i remember hearing thw water being poured out....) and else.
