It's the requiems that do it for me, the drama and the emotion (I'm not even religious!) just get me.

Lacrimosa - Mozart's Requiem (makes me cry appropriately enough)
Dies Irae - Verdi's Requiem (not beautiful or haunting I grant you but definitely sent chills down my spine when I sang it with my old choir)
Faure's Requiem - The whole lot I love, although particularly Agnus Dei. I hate the fact it's used for adverts and the like, how could they??!
Bach's Air on a G String - I know it's considered a bit naff these days but I love it passionately.
Bach's St Matthew Passion - I love the opening chorus 'Come Ye Daughters', the end chorus and one of the short verses 'Be near me Lord when dying', which I had played at my mother's funeral.

I do find it hard to let new music in as I compare everything to the above, however, I shall check out some of the suggestions and give it a go!

Thanks

Barber- Adagio for strings

Bernstein- symphony no. 3

Bruckner- Symphony No. 7 (adagio)
Symphony No. 9- 1st and 3rd mvts.

Mahler- I recommend everything he wrote, but here are some highlights-
Symphony No. 2- Mvts. 4 and 5
Symphony No. 3 mvts 4 and 6
Symphony No. 4- 3rd movement
Symphony No. 5- adagietto (4th mvt)
Symphony No. 6- Andante
Symphony No. 8- all
Das Lied von der Erde- all
Kindertotenlieder- all
Ruckert Lieder- all
Symphony No. 9- mvts. 1 and 4
Symphony No. 10-adagio

Shostakovich- a lot of his music is EXTREMELY depressing. Symphony No. 13 especially.

Also recommended are
Symphony No. 5 (3rd mvt)
Symphony No. 8
Symphony No. 14
Songs From Jewish Folk Poetry

Sibelius- Symphony No. 5
Violin Concerto

Tchaikovsky- Symphony No. 5- andante
Symphony No. 6 mvts 1+4

That's just what I could come up with off the top of my head. There's lots more great stuff, obviously. happy (or not) listening!

I like that, Pacific Symphony will be doing this at OCPAC soon. I saw them do Saent-Sans's Organ Symphony and even though the composition is very simple the last chord felt great. The entire end of A Day In the Life by The Beatles gives me chills, but I think this is only if I listen to the entire song, the music and lyrics together have a big impact to my emotion/listening.

The "Hymn of Thanks-giving" from Beethoven's "Pastoral" symphony often does it for me.
Also a similar point in the finale of Nielsen's Wind Quintet--the first statement of the hymn-like tune.
Also a particular recording of an oboe concerto by Albinoni, I don't remember by whom: the strings were pizz. under the oboe in the slow movement.
