Hundreds. I can list 5 without even thinking about it. they are not all as famous as Bach/Gounod or Schubert. I recently played church organ for a wedding where 5 of the songs were called Ave Maria.

Grandmother's right it's way older than 1970. Ave Maria (Salutatio Angelica), is a traditional Catholic and Orthodox church prayer calling for the intercession of Mary, the mother of Jesus and is rooted mainly in biblical texts. Two Anglo-Saxon manuscripts at the British Museum, one of which may be as old as the year 1030, show that the words "Ave Maria" etc. and "benedicta tu in mulieribus et benedictus fructus ventris tui". Although we cannot be sure that these clauses were at first joined together so as to make one prayer, there is conclusive evidence that this had come to pass only a very little later. Your Grandmother will have sang The Ave Maria composed in about 1825 by Franz Schubert (1797-1828) when he was twenty-eight years old and filled with devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was written for voice and piano and first Published in 1826.

I've lost count myself--the standard lyrics are from St. Luke 1:28b,30b-33 (Vulgate), and some versions include St. Luke 1:42b (Vulgate). The earliest version of this Motet, of which I am aware, is a Contrapunctus composed by one Josquin des Prez (1450?-1521). It was a common subject for later composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach (Charles Gounod set the lyrics to an excerpt from the Praeludium of BWV 846), Franz Schubert (set to Op. 52 No. 6, D.839), even Vladimir Vavilov (who wrote a version styled after Giulio Caccini).

Unfortunately, Wikipedia has only a partial listing of compositions of the Ave Maria, as of this post.

Ave Maria is just a Latin "Hail Mary" and thousands of composers have set the text to music. I have sung at least 10 choral arrangements from Beibl to Rachmaninoff (russian Bogorotitse Djevo) and probably about the same amount as a solo tenor. There is no way to measure. Its just a standard text like a Kyrie or a Pie Jesu or Agnus Dei. My favorite for a choir is the Rachmaninoff, and my favorite for solo is the Gounod.

Ave Maria (Hail Mary) is a hymn of the Roman Catholic Church and as such has been set by numerous composers from the 12th century onwards. It is a bit like the Roman Catholic mass. Very many Catholic composers have had a go at their own setting.

I once participated in a concert called Ave Maria ... that's all we sang from the chant to Stravinsky to Poulenc to Bruckner to Rachmaninoff nearly 2 hours and we barely scratched the surface (FYI we didn't do Schubert, Bach-Gounod nor Caccini)
