'50s: Elvis Presley - for being Elvis Presley
'60s: The Beatles - for being The Beatles
'70s: Sex Pistols - punk and new wave being the first resurrection in rock history, giving it a new direction
'80s: Depeche Mode - the electronic revolution, and how it reached the masses
'90s: Nirvana - the underground boom
Note: they are NOT necessarily the best or most succesful groups/artists, but the most influential ones, who made an impact, changed the name of the game, etc. Please leave me alone with real pioneers, like Iggy Pop for punk, Kraftwerk for electronic music, I'm talking about the iconic ones who did that on a global scale.
