Depends on which side of the fence you're on. Most fans who were listening to Metallica in the earlier days (like me) believe they really got lame after The Black Album, which only had two decent cuts -- "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters." If you're one of the folks who thinks older Metallica is better, then you need to get the following albums first: Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets. After that, invest in And Justice For All and get a copy of Garage Days Re-Revisited if you can find one.

i can see that sarge knows his metallica,but 2 albums he seems to have missed out are the $5.95 ep, and a live album called live s**t(double album)

It's the one that made them big, but made before they were too big. If you want something harder, go for the earlier ones. This one was still pretty raw, but if you are into their radio songs you'll still enjoy it.
