'50s: Elvis Presley - for being Elvis Presley
'60s: The Beatles - for being The Beatles
'70s: Sex Pistols - punk and new wave being the first resurrection in rock history, giving it a new direction
'80s: Depeche Mode - the electronic revolution, and how it reached the masses
'90s: Nirvana - the underground boom

Note: they are NOT necessarily the best or most succesful groups/artists, but the most influential ones, who made an impact, changed the name of the game, etc. Please leave me alone with real pioneers, like Iggy Pop for punk, Kraftwerk for electronic music, I'm talking about the iconic ones who did that on a global scale.

Any views?

I agree with the 50's.
I also somewhat agree with the 60's, except it's hard to leave out the Who and the 'Stones.
The 70's were a mess. However, you say your avoiding real pioneers (like Kraftwerk), and I'd put the Sex Pistols in that category, as they only made 1LP and it wasnt' too successful until well after its release. I'd be inclined to put the Clash up there instead.

Depeche Mode is my favorite band of all time, but even I can't say that they were the most influential of the 80's. Human League had a much bigger electronica hit years before Depeche Mode charted. And it's impossible to dismiss the influence of Michael (vomit) Jackson.

I agree with the 90's.

Thanks for the question!

I would say that the Sex Pistols came out late in the 70's and had more inflence on the music of the 80's actually, they were punk and so many bands followed from there - both British & American. and I'd lose Depeche Mode (I liked them, but they DID NOT define the era). I'd put Led Zepplin into the 70's - they influence all the hair bands and guitar heros for decades to come
