To Those Wanna-Be Movie Directors?

You know for those of us who want to be professional movie directors, I was thinking, it is hard as hell, what made Steven Spielberg or George Lucas worthy of being in Hollywood, how does a wanna-be actually get into Hollywood, of course 2 ways, have a connection, or kiss some major ***, but for those of us who want to do it the honest hard-working way, how do we get into Hollywood? What would be the ultimate film festival or place to get in the stream of Hollywood, stupidly I should of moved to California, because you have a bigger chance to get noticed if you live in L.A, but most directors lived somewhere else. How does one do it?
