Yeah. Had this guy once that I really liked and spent a lot of time with. He told me I was special and wanted to spend more time with me. I called him the next week, and his brother answered the phone and told me the jerk had gone out to Michigan to be with his penpal. They eventually got married.

It's happened to me a few times. But, in WEIRD ways.
One way I remember was I had been fired from some place, and one of the employees, who I liked who I thought liked me, took me out to dinner, me paying.
Long story short, I'm glad I don't live in that time anymore.
