Has anyone ever studied any subject that would give an idea to the thought process of a Squirrel?

I have a squirrel perch on a tree in the back yard, but every time I go out to add a new ear of corn they run as soon as they see me and then come back after I am completely in the house. Do they have any idea that I am leaving the corn, or do they think I am tryin to hurt them?
