The ratio of boys and girls riding on the three busses is not significant. You mention that in the first bus there are fifty students so I presume 1 busload can contain only 50 students. Therefore, the three buses has a total number of 150 students . Is my guess right?

in 1st bus: 20 boys, 30 girls. Total: 50

in 2nd bus, there are 6 boys for every 5 in the 1st bus. So if there are 20 (5*4) in the 1st bus, there must be 6*4=24 boys in 2nd bus. same # of girls. Total, 48

3rd bus: 7 girls for every 8 in bus 2. 24=8*3. So there must be 7*3=21 girls in 3rd bus. 3 girls for every 2 boys in 3rd bus. so # of boys=2*7=14. Total: 35

Grand total: 50+48+35=133

Another vote for Katherine. My calculations agree with her sub totals and total...133.

A more clever answer could include the drivers and chaperons, but the question doesn't allow for them.
