I have moved to the US a year ago and having gotten used to some of the cultural differences (far more than I thought) when reading through the answers I can tell some are from American and some are from British people and can understand how some answers might not make sense if the Q has come from an English person and a respondent is from the US. Why don't yahoo show this, I am sure it would help alot of people understand the answers they get better.

When I went to a university, I had to take an essay test almost every time I turned around . Being able to successfully take an essay test is the most useless ability on the planet . Nobody needs to take an essay test once they get out of school, and if nobody needs to take an essay test once they get out of school, what's the point of giving essay tests ? Nobody ever says to a group of job applicants, "If you get the highest score on our essay test, we'll give you a job !" . Why should the ability to take essay tests be rewarded ? I say essay tests are immoral and unethical, and they should be illegal !

I am currently applying to some top 25 programs in liberal arts, specifically phd programs in english/ comp lit at Berkeley, UCLA, Irvine. I did really well in my verbal score (700 at 96 percentile) but mediocre (4.5, 51 percentile) results in my analytical writing section. I graduated with 3.6 gpa in english from Chapel Hill. What are my chances at a good program with a lackluster gre writing score?

People say that it is good for them to do it but some people think that it is wrong and may have a bad reaction towards them such as a bad rep. or other bad influences. How does that work though?

I understand that the rationale behind word limits is mainly to rescue whoever evaluates the essay/report from the risk of being faced with an overwhelmingly lengthy and non-qualitative piece.

Some people are naturally good at keeping their essays/reports/other pieces of writing short and to-the-point. Their ideas of 'significant points' in a piece of writing also seem to fit in perfectly with what everyone else would think.

But it is not so for people like me, who find just about everything significant and worth dedicating paragraphs to. It is not unusual for me attempt a 1000-word essay and end up with 3000 words, or take five times the length of time I took to write an essay to trim it down. It's a very painful process too!

Does anyone have similar experiences to share - or perhaps - any advice for people like us? Thank you!
