I am currently applying to some top 25 programs in liberal arts, specifically phd programs in english/ comp lit at Berkeley, UCLA, Irvine. I did really well in my verbal score (700 at 96 percentile) but mediocre (4.5, 51 percentile) results in my analytical writing section. I graduated with 3.6 gpa in english from Chapel Hill. What are my chances at a good program with a lackluster gre writing score?

From what I've heard from colleagues and friends who work in Liberal Arts departments the GRE writing score is not factored in as heavily as your overall score, undergraduate GPA, and the writing sample that most programs require to be sent with the application. While programs usually use the GRE as a means of determining an applicant's overall standing it is most definitely not the only means of determining admissions status nor is it the most important. Having a strong writing sample to submit with your application as well as a good UGPA and good recommendations can in most cases compensate for what may appear to be a low score on a portion of a standardized exam. Don't worry and just focus on sending in the best application and best writing sample you can. Good luck
