OUr son has autism and as such, I am severely limited in my ability to work outside the home. My husband in in the AIr Force, but we live in one of the most exspensive counties in the US (Montgomery Co.) which we chose because of the outstanding level of services for developmentally delayed children. However, we are feeling the crunch. My son's teacher has suggested he may qualify for SSI because of the level of his disability. I am planning to begin the process, but wondered if anyon has been through it as a parent, what thier experiences were and things like the qualifying level of family income, etc. Any information would be of a huge help. Thanks!!

M 7 yr old is autistic with very limited verbal language. Both we and his teachers are at a loss to figure out how to stop this as it is, obviously, a safety issue. He has no sense of danger and would run right into traffic. So far we've been able to just strap him in a stroller or have a tight hold on him but he IS getting older. I don't want to have to tackle him when he's 12 and older! If anyone knows of a way of dealing with this (seriously... ignorant *bleeps* need not answer) it would be greatly appreciated.

After reading through some of these questions I'm beginning to doubt the presence of any sort of structured teaching of spelling and grammar in this country.

They come in with these professional advocates and lawyers and their pre-packaged agendas for their children. It doesn't matter whether I'm there or not, they have DECIDED what the IEP team will implement, no matter what my input may be.

He can spell all his words when he wants to! The first three weeks of school he had 100's and now he just doesn't care. I can't get him to be motivated to study the words it's the only problem we're having at this time which is just awesome to say the least! We've tried a few reward systems, but he just doesn't care. His aid has been giving him his test and his teacher is going to start this week, but I can't get him to work on the words at all when he's at home. He doesn't even try on the test he gives of 'silly' answers that he knows is wrong.

I highly suspect my child's teacher has not read it and she keeps complaining about certain behaviors he has that are well-documented in his IEP. Isn't she required to have read it?
