After reading through some of these questions I'm beginning to doubt the presence of any sort of structured teaching of spelling and grammar in this country.

I think you have a point. Granted we all make mistakes, but some of the spelling around here is atrocious. And they apparently can't read 'Check Spelling' either.

Oh my fellow answer participant, please do not make disparaging remarks about the spelling and content of the questions.
This site has come a long way from what it was a few months ago. Some of the earlier things on here were awful. Just plain babble. exp. of a typical earlier question would be this-
jest cuz likena dthen die dudette and like we went ta the and then dem dudes fit ansd fit ans welll wha tup withj it?
huh?
I am not joking. This is a true thing I show you here.
If you were adaptable to the kids you had to read between and beside and over the top of the sentences, and then guess.
The above question would read in normal human adult language as this
I went to the mall tonight and some other teenagers we saw there were disrespectful and rude to me and my companions. Why would they be that way to people they don't even know?
I am telling you the truth. It is pitiful, but the improvement in this site is 200 percent. The language is still rather raw, but not filthy and nasty and disrespectful, as well as just plain racist like it was in the past. People have been thrown out and well now it is turning into a very nice place to be, I am glad i stuck it out.

Right you are about the questions on Yahoo! Answers. It is worse than spelling and grammar. The worst part is so many questions are parsed in such a way that it is truly not possible to answer them. Often, I have no idea what the questioner is talking about.

While you're at it you may want to know that the correct term is 'teachers of English'. Or, English Language teachers. "English teacher" could mean teachers of any subject from the country of England. "English" should be capitalized as the name of a language.

Further, the subject commonly not taught and badly needed is logic, which is not required at even some of the best universities.

A number of people that are posting or answering questions are not native English speakers (like me!). I think you should give us some credit for trying :-P. Although English is a beautiful language, it's one of the hardest ones (at least to me it is). But I know how you feel. I feel the same way about my native language, its sad to see a language to go so "screwed up." Here's an example: I haven't washed my car in like, a year and a half? I had my car parked in the school's parking lot; when I got off from class, I saw the word "labame" written on my car's dusty window. Well, the word "labame" was spelled incorrectly, it's "lávame (means "wash me" in Spanish)." It didn't annoy me that they were messing with my car (who cares? it was too dirty anyways), but it annoyed me that they couldn't even spell that simple word correctly. ~Cheers!~

Hey, you know, I just noticed the "check spelling" button! Thanks. I have to admit, halfway through my senior year in HS, teachers for some reason decided to quit teaching spelling in exchange for showing semi-pornographic videos and having us read novels of the same genre. It is very disturbing where education is heading.

I also think the computer age is dumbing down our ability to properly spell in that our mistakes are now "corrected" for us. That, and well, there are a lot of posters on here who are still learning to read and write phonetically!

That said, I only had one spelling mistake after I checked it! Getting better now that I am more aware!

Wow, has the world changed since I was young. I agree with you, spelling and grammar are horrible.

The specific answer to your question: At a high school in Sioux Falls, SD is an English teacher named Mrs. M. She is the mother of one of my best friends. I had her for college english. I know, in that part of the world, proper English and grammar are enforced. There is still one teacher out there who won't let anyone get away with sloppy work.

Now I am obsessing, over my English and grammar. Thanks! Just kidding.

You forget one thing. Most of the people the questions belong to are not American nor native English speakers. So instead of counting people s mistakes see how good their English is.By the way there is a spelling mistake in your question.See?If there are no English teachers left in the US they have probably all gone to Japan or elsewhere. How about importing some?Like me for instance.

It gets worse, if you go to the politics questions, the adults in the US seem to have a problem piecing together a sentence! Things are getting worse in old blightie too.
