It can be a heart breaking disorder. A little girl is progressing normally, learning to walk, talk, and engage with the world, and then generally beginning around 2, gradually looses those skills until she is a shell of her former self. One of the hallmarks is that the girls will walk on their tiptoes and wring their hands constantly. Many of the girls become wheelchair bound as they grow up because the leg muscles become spastic.

Rett's Syndrome is a nerological/neurodevelopmental disorder that only occurs in young girls who progress normally in their development. At some point, the girls regress in development within the ages of 6 and 18 months old. It rarely happens more than once between a mother and father. Characteristics can include Apraxia, loss of communication, seizures, gait abnormalities, and scoliosis. According to some sources, a girl can exhibit some Autistic like symptoms in the early stages. It is caused by a genetic mutation on the X chromosome on the MECP2 gene.
