If you want to teach, you would get a degree in special education. IF not, I would volunteer somewhere. Here in my town we have a factor type thing and the only workers are mentally handicapped. they are always looking for volunteers. You can also go to the local schools and sub teach or ask them if you could volunteer to work with special needs kids.

To be an assistant you only need 30 hours of college. Teachers need a 4 year degree. It also helps to know about the different special needs. Learn about Down syndrome, autism and all the variations on the spectrum because no 2 children are exactly alike, also learn about other disabilities. It helps to learn first aide and CPR. You may need to use it.This is a very rewarding field to be in. Some days are very rough and others very good. Even on the rough days I walk out with a smile knowing that I helped children who needed my help.Good Luck to you!!!

I was a learning support worker at a special needs residential school. The kids all had Aspbergers (autisic spectrum). I had no qualifications except a certificate in chidcare from college.
Have you a specific field of interest in mind. Some place you work at will help you towards getting a NVQ

. A burning desire to help...your half way there
A day care in your area is a good place to start.
You need to be finger printed by your local police station for a background check with the F.B.I.
Then take a C.P.R. class and first aid (for kids) it's different than for adults
Then you are ready to find out if special needs is your calling.
Some day cares require E.C.E. classes if you are going to teach pre-school classes...or help with homework..
It's fast paced and stressful...the pay isn't great, but you can't beat the experience. Some places will let you work part-time, if you are going to school also, or can't leave a full or part time job.
Good Luck...we definitly need more people like you.

First of all you need to identify what kind of healthcare/social work you wish to do. It's a very wide field. Do you wish to work with children, adults with special needs, the elderly, people with mental illness? As in any line of business or career you will not progress far without relevant professional qualifications. Unless you wish to remain merely the "assistant" or "helper" to the professionally qualified staff member I think you will have to obtain further qualifications. This is a very big change in direction for you; have you considered doing some voluntary work first to see whether you really are suited to social work?

1. volunteer - classrooms for students with disabilities always can use extra help, and you will know for sure if you like this profession
2. get a job as an educational assistant in a classroom - in my state you get a certificate to do that
3. bachelors degree in special education (takes 4-5 years if going fulltime)
4. There are other jobs where you can work with kids who have disabilties - social work, speech therapsit, respite homes, etc.
Good luck!
